Check a Vehicle

Why does the full report cost $1.99? NZTA charges a fee for accessing detailed vehicle data. Once NZTA removes this charge (expected 2027/2028), we plan to offer this service for free.

Perfect For

Private Vehicle Sales

Verify RUC status before buying or selling a diesel or electric vehicle. Outstanding RUC follows the vehicle, not the owner.

Pre-Purchase Checks

Get a full compliance snapshot including RUC, WOF, rego, and stolen status before committing to a purchase.

Fleet Management

Monitor RUC balances across your fleet. Avoid penalties by staying ahead of licence renewals.

Personal Records

Download a professional PDF certificate of your vehicle's compliance status for your own records.

Understanding RUC Liability

Essential for Private Car Sales

Road User Charges (RUC) are tied to the vehicle, not the owner. When a vehicle changes hands, any outstanding RUC balance or deficit transfers to the new owner. This makes checking RUC status a critical step in any private vehicle sale.

For Buyers

Check the RUC balance before you buy. If the previous owner ran up kilometres without purchasing enough RUC, you inherit that debt. A quick check can save you hundreds in unexpected charges.

For Sellers

Providing a current RUC report builds trust with buyers and shows you have nothing to hide. It can speed up the sale and help you get a fair price.

Which Vehicles Need RUC in New Zealand?

  • Diesel vehicles - all diesel-powered vehicles on NZ roads
  • Electric vehicles - RUC applies from 1 April 2024
  • Heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes - higher RUC rates based on weight
  • Alternative fuel vehicles - CNG, LPG, and other non-petrol fuels

Petrol vehicles are generally exempt from RUC - road funding is covered through fuel excise duty at the pump.

Why Check RUC Status?

Avoid Surprises

Discover outstanding RUC debt before it becomes your problem. Unpaid RUC can result in fines and enforcement action.

Stay Compliant

Keep on top of your RUC balance to avoid running over your purchased distance. Staying compliant means no penalties.
