Which Vehicles Need RUC in New Zealand?

  • Diesel vehicles - all diesel-powered vehicles on NZ roads
  • Electric vehicles - RUC applies from 1 April 2024
  • Heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes - higher RUC rates based on weight
  • Alternative fuel vehicles - CNG, LPG, and other non-petrol fuels

Petrol vehicles are generally exempt from RUC - road funding is covered through fuel excise duty at the pump.
