Overview

The Vehicle Industry Association (VIA), formally the Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association, represents the businesses bringing used vehicles into New Zealand. Its membership spans importers, exporters, shipping companies, inspection agencies, ports, compliance businesses, wholesalers and retailers.

Founded in 1989, VIA provides technical and legal guidance, industry updates and policy advocacy. It works with government agencies on the rules affecting vehicle imports and helps members navigate requirements before vehicles reach New Zealand roads.

VIA participates in the Ministry of Transport’s Land Transport Revenue Stakeholder Reference Group. It brings the used-vehicle supply chain’s perspective to discussions about changes in road funding.

In February 2024, VIA joined MIA, MTA, the AA, Drive Electric and Better New Zealand Trust in a letter challenging the proposed EV RUC rates. The letter supported EVs paying towards roads but called for fair treatment compared with petrol vehicles. VIA’s wider work on vehicle standards and affordability also connects road-charging policy with the vehicles available to New Zealand buyers.
