Overview

TR Driver Training is a division of TR Group Limited, New Zealand's leading heavy vehicle rental and lease company. Established in 1992, TR Driver Training operates 10 purpose-built training centres across New Zealand, from Auckland to Dunedin, delivering heavy vehicle licensing, compliance training, and specialist operator programmes. The organisation is registered and accredited as a Private Training Establishment with Category 1 status from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) - the highest accreditation level - and is a registered training provider with Waka Kotahi NZTA, with licensed driving instructors for both light and heavy motor vehicles. TR Driver Training offers accelerated pathways from learner to full licence for Class 2 through Class 5 heavy vehicles, eliminating the standard six-month wait through NZTA-approved courses. Beyond licensing, the training portfolio spans dangerous goods endorsements, forklift operator certification, container handling (sidelifter/Hiab), stability and control training, safe and fuel-efficient driving, and off-road and 4WD programmes. The division benefits from direct access to TR Group's fleet of over 6,500 trucks and trailers, giving trainees hands-on experience with the same vehicles they will encounter in the industry. TR Driver Training is a sponsor of the New Zealand Truck Driving Competition and is recognised as one of the country's foremost providers of heavy vehicle operator education, serving both individual drivers seeking licences and corporate fleets requiring compliance and upskilling programmes.

Founded TR Group in 1992. Has grown the business from 65 trailers to a fleet of over 6,500 vehicles across New Zealand and Australia.

RUC Involvement

TR Driver Training operates in the heavy vehicle sector where Road User Charges are a fundamental cost of operation. While TR Driver Training does not directly process or sell RUC, its parent company TR Group operates one of New Zealand's largest heavy vehicle fleets (6,500+ trucks and trailers), making it a significant RUC payer. TR Driver Training's compliance and licensing courses prepare drivers for careers in the heavy transport industry where understanding RUC obligations is essential.

Market Position

  • One of New Zealand's largest NZTA-approved heavy vehicle training providers
  • 10 training centres from Auckland to Dunedin
  • Category 1 NZQA accreditation - the highest quality rating
  • Parent company TR Group operates 6,500+ heavy vehicles subject to RUC

Policy Positions

  • Focused on driver compliance and safety training rather than direct RUC policy advocacy
  • Training programmes include compliance modules relevant to heavy vehicle RUC obligations
