The RUC vs Fuel Excise Calculator is an independent, Netlify-hosted scenario tool for New Zealand petrol vehicle owners. It compares the present 70.024-cent-per-litre petrol excise with an assumed light-vehicle RUC of $76 per 1,000km plus a $13 transaction fee. Those are the tool author's modelling inputs, not confirmed settings for the future petrol-fleet transition: Cabinet has not fixed the transition date, future petrol RUC rates or retail fees. Users enter fuel efficiency and annual distance, then choose a 1,000km or 10,000km purchase option. The displayed 12.71 L/100km break-even includes the $13 fee on a 1,000km purchase; buying larger distance blocks changes the comparison. The tool also contains pre-calculated 2024 vehicle examples and links to RightCar for fuel-efficiency data. It is useful for illustrating how flat per-kilometre charging can shift costs between efficient and inefficient vehicles, but should not be treated as a forecast of an enacted scheme.
