Electrification charity researching household and business energy costs, with RUC advocacy focused on EV economics and a fair transition.
Rewiring Aotearoa is a charity working to help New Zealand households, farms and businesses replace fossil-fuel equipment with electric alternatives. It combines research, public explainers and community projects, covering vehicles alongside heating, cooking, solar power and batteries.
The organisation is primarily funded by New Zealand philanthropy, with additional donations and project income. Led by Mike Casey, it publishes research on the costs and benefits of electrification and advocates for policies that make the transition affordable.
Its RUC work examines how road charges change the cost of owning and driving an EV. In August 2025, Rewiring argued that bringing petrol vehicles into the same charging system would make comparisons clearer and improve the relative economics of EVs.
Rewiring supported the direction of the Land Transport (Revenue) Amendment Bill and appeared before the Transport and Infrastructure Committee on 2 February 2026. Its submission called for an early, clear transition timetable, reporting on EV and petrol running costs, and temporary measures to address unfairness while the two groups face different charging systems.
Models energy costs and the economics of switching homes, farms, businesses and vehicles to electricity.
Publishes reports, explainers and practical material about electric technologies.
Supports local electrification projects and advocates for affordable access to electric equipment and energy.
Rewiring Aotearoa was established.
Published analysis of the proposed move to RUC for all light vehicles.
Presented to the Transport and Infrastructure Committee on 2 February.
