Overview

Picobyte Solutions Limited is a privately held New Zealand technology company specialising in IoT-driven SaaS solutions for the transport sector. Founded in October 2018, the company is headquartered in Newmarket, Auckland and operates as an NZTA-approved Electronic RUC Service Provider through its RUC Monkey and myRUC platforms. Picobyte positions itself as a Kiwi-owned alternative to the larger multinational telematics providers in the New Zealand eRUC market. The company's product suite extends beyond electronic road user charges into electronic driver logbooks (eLogbook), trailer tracking IoT hardware (T-Croc), gate reader systems for trailer mileage (AlligateR), and connected telematics solutions. Picobyte has built its market presence through integration partnerships with established fleet management platforms including Webfleet (Bridgestone), IVCS ONE, MTData, and Remote Control, enabling their eRUC capabilities to be embedded within existing fleet ecosystems. Picobyte was co-founded by Manoj Dolli and Rene Sugo. The eLogbook intellectual property is noted as being owned by Picobyte Solutions Limited, which is described as a wholly owned subsidiary of Xlerate Technologies Limited, a New Zealand software company founded in 2004 that focuses on mobile asset productivity. As New Zealand moves toward mandatory eRUC for all vehicles from 1 July 2027, Picobyte is positioning its lower-cost, app-based myRUC solution as an accessible option for light vehicle owners, EV drivers, and bus operators.

RUC Involvement

Picobyte Solutions is an NZTA-approved Electronic RUC Service Provider operating under contract as an agent of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. The company runs two distinct eRUC platforms: RUC Monkey for heavy vehicles and myRUC for light vehicles and buses. Picobyte claims myRUC is the first and only app-based eRUC (EaRUC) approved in New Zealand, representing a newer approach that uses smartphone apps and E-ink displays rather than traditional in-cab hardware units.

Market Position

  • NZTA-approved eRUC provider through RUC Monkey and myRUC Pro platforms
  • Positioned as a lower-cost, NZ-owned alternative to larger providers like EROAD and Teletrac Navman
  • First EaRUC (app-based eRUC) approved in New Zealand, developed for buses with NZ Bus
  • Growing through integration partnerships with Webfleet, IVCS ONE, MTData, and other fleet platforms
  • Targets the pre-2027 transition period as all NZ vehicles must adopt eRUC by 1 July 2027

Policy Positions

  • Advocates for accessible, lower-cost eRUC solutions for owner-drivers and small fleets
  • Promotes BYO-device (smartphone-based) eRUC as a cost-effective alternative - myRUC hardware is $285 incl. GST (self-installed, no wiring) with $8.90 admin fee per RUC purchase, versus professional installation for traditional eRUC hardware
  • Supports the transition to universal eRUC for all vehicles including EVs, PHEVs, and light diesels
