Versatile fleet management solutions for heavy vehicle and machinery fleets in the road, construction, and transport industries.
M5 is a fleet-management platform and brand offered by Symtech Limited, a Hamilton-based New Zealand company registered in 2002. It combines vehicle, plant and asset tracking with maintenance, driver-safety, fuel, pre-start inspection and compliance functions. Symtech supplies installed tracking hardware, the web-based M5 portal and the Guardian mobile app, with a stated focus on transport, civil contracting, agriculture and other operators managing mixed fleets. Its aRUC product automates aspects of RUC purchasing, claims and reporting using vehicle-usage and location data. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi lists aRUC as an approved electronically assisted RUC system. This is a separate category from an approved electronic distance recorder or electronic system provider. Symtech says its systems track more than 4,000 vehicles, plant and machinery and that Higgins has used M5 for more than a decade; these are organisational claims rather than independently audited measures.
Mobile and fleet-management functions including vehicle tracking, pre-start inspections, job and repair reporting, staff timesheets, check-ins, location tracking and SOS or Help alerts. Use requires an M5 account.
Fleet analytics and compliance platform offering real-time asset tracking, maintenance and fuel management, fleet analytics, driver insights, cost management and in-operation equipment reporting.
Battery-powered Bluetooth Low Energy asset tracker for equipment without a permanent power connection. M5 describes map and table views, site-level location visibility, mobile compatibility, automated reporting and arrival or departure records.
NZTA-approved electronically assisted RUC system. M5 says it uses vehicle-usage and location data to automate RUC purchasing, claims, refunds and reporting. NZTA does not list aRUC as an approved electronic distance recorder.
In-vehicle telematics device described by M5 as collecting GPS, vehicle and input data and transmitting it to the M5 platform over cellular networks.
Digital inspection function that lets drivers complete checks, record issues and create repair or service jobs through the Guardian app and M5 platform.
Symtech Limited was incorporated on 29 November 2002 (Company No. 1257639, NZBN 9429036236053).
The company began trading, initially focused on custom software and electronic hardware design for the automotive and asset-management sectors.
M5000 tracking hardware was developed as a GPS and cellular telematics unit for fleet and equipment tracking.
Higgins became a long-term M5 customer, according to M5; the company now says the relationship has lasted more than a decade.
The M5 Guardian mobile app was released for iOS and Android, adding staff-safety, location, pre-start inspection and timesheet functions.
The company reports receiving a NZ$229,100 Callaghan Innovation research and development grant.
M5 presented four named product lines on its website: Guardian, Sentinel, Beacon and aRUC.
By July 2026, NZTA listed aRUC as an approved electronically assisted RUC system. NZTA lists this category separately from approved electronic system providers and electronic distance recorders.

Symtech provides aRUC through the M5 platform. NZTA lists aRUC as an approved electronically assisted RUC system: a digital RUC display and app category that NZTA distinguishes from approved electronic system providers and electronic distance recorders. M5 says aRUC can automate RUC purchases using vehicle-usage data and manage claims, refunds and compliance reporting. Its broader platform also records vehicle location, distance and operational data for mixed fleets.
