Overview

EVDB NZ is an independent electric-vehicle database and comparison platform founded in 2021 by James Foster. Its live catalogue in July 2026 compared 80 models and 181 variants, with curated specifications, pricing, weekly-updated reference lists and monthly New Zealand market insights. The platform now combines vehicle comparison with a real-range calculator, EV-versus-petrol running-cost model, home-charging calculator, public-charging network information and charger comparisons. Its separate RUC calculator at ruc.evdb.nz models current $76-per-1,000km light EV RUC and the $38 PHEV rate, and can also demonstrate the effect of applying a flat RUC to petrol vehicles. EVDB also publishes monthly uptake and best-selling-model analysis and offers data services to industry clients.

Features & Services

EV Comparison Database

Comprehensive database of all EVs available in New Zealand with detailed specifications, pricing, range data, and curated lists (cheapest, fastest, best range-vs-price, towing, V2L, LFP batteries, charging speed).

RUC Calculator (ruc.evdb.nz)

Dedicated Road User Charges calculator for EV and PHEV owners. Calculates annual RUC costs based on vehicle type and estimated driving distance, using current NZTA rates ($76/1000km for EVs, $38/1000km for PHEVs).

ICE vs EV Running Cost Calculator

Compares day-to-day running costs of an internal combustion engine vehicle (searched by plate) against any EV model. Factors in fuel costs, electricity costs, public charging costs, and WLTP consumption data.

Charge Time Calculator

Calculates estimated time and cost to charge an EV at home in New Zealand based on vehicle model, charger type, and electricity price.

Real Range Calculator

Estimates real-world driving range rather than relying only on the published WLTP figure.

Charging Guides
